healthcare-acquired infection (HAI). Patients enter a hospital or healthcare environ-
ment to have illnesses treated and healthcare professionals undertake their jobs to en-
sure that patients leave hospitals with their problems treated and/or progressing toward
good health. To this end there are protocols, guidance documents, and standards (na-
tional and/or international) in place to protect the patient and prevent them from being
harmed during their stay in hospital. However, HAI is a constant part of everyday life
in the healthcare sector [1, 2]. Likewise, in the European Union, the European Center
for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) indicated that approximately 4.1 million
acute care patients acquire a HCAI annually, with 37,000 deaths attributed to HCAI [3].
