This is an important book. It is rare that a book comes along, which reframes
the way we look at our world but this is a ground-breaking volume. By using
the word ‘look’ though we are already revealing how powerful and pervasive
visual metaphors are as a heuristic device to describe not only what meets the
eye but what goes beyond to create meaning. Nurses often complain their
work is invisible and of the diffi culty of describing what they do. Davina
Allen has done us a great service by providing us with a lens through which
to ‘see’ nurses’ organising work. This is no mean feat, one which is rigorously
grounded in an empirical reconceptualisation of nursing work and draws
deftly on actor network theory. Nursing is relational and not just of people.
The role that nurses play is often connecting different parts of the system that
have or need to have some relationship with each other.
