Since this is an unusual book, its genesis deserves some explanation. Although my
training is in basic research, I have always felt the need to take science out of the
“ivory tower” and apply it to real-life problems. While certain disciplines of science,
such as public health and medicine, are readily applicable to problems in the “real
world,” it is less obvious how to make basic molecular biology research directly rel-
evant. Yet I was fascinated by the beauty of the biological system and had often
thought of the cell as an instructive example for human society, with its components
interacting in a harmonious and nondiscriminatory manner, exhibiting remarkable
energy efficiency and unity of purpose. I also enjoyed the process of scientific inves-
tigation — the rigor, the precision, and the creativity involved in designing and
testing hypotheses.
