Immunotoxicology is a new area of toxicology. The introduction of potent immu-
nosuppressive drugs into the clinical setting in the 1960s was the first attempt in the
pharmacological manipulation of the immune system. Following the introduction of these
drugs, enormous progress could be achieved in the field of organ transplantation, but severe
adverse consequences to the health of treated patients were also soon evidenced. Clinicians
and toxicologists became aware that immunosuppression can result in various infectious
complications and more frequent lymphomas as well as other virus-induced neoplasias.
Concern arose that chemical exposure, either at the workplace or via environmental pollution,
could induce similar adverse health consequences.
