I began work on the PhD thesis that forms the basis of this book in 2004

at the Queen Mary University of London, and since then different insti-
tutions and many people have offered me their support, help, and advice.

This book would not have been possible without the support of the Westfield
Trust Scholarship during my PhD. The Central Research Fund of the Institute
of Historical Research provided me with financial assistance to undertake
archival research in Italy during the second year of my PhD. I have been
very fortunate to have Daniel Pick and Julian Jackson as supervisors of my
doctoral thesis. I owe special thanks to them for their enduring support
and for all the times they have been present when I needed advice. This
has meant a lot to me. I am also grateful to the Centre for the History of
