In October 1913, Key West’s health officer, Joseph Y. Porter Jr., sent Florida’s chief health officer, Joseph Y. Porter (Porter Jr.’s father), four photographs of a fly exhibit that he had created for the benefit of the city’s residents.1 Flies were
a topic of public health concern across the nation, and Key West’s long history
of yellow fever outbreaks meant that it was no exception. Moreover, yellow fever
was a personal issue; Porter’s grandparents both died of it.
