Drug resistance is widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest threats to global public health in the coming decades. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization, describes antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as ‘a global crisis’ and ‘the perfect example of the complex, multi-sectoral, multi-stakeholder challenges we will increasingly face in the future’.1 In addition to scientific research, addressing the challenge of drug resistance requires coming to grips with numerous difficult ethical questions.
